UK’s Deputy Prime Minister Launches 250th Anniversary Celebrations in the US
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy commenced a two-day visit to Washington DC on 7 January, marking the initiation of the UK’s participation in the America 250 celebrations. This year commemorates 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with Lammy set to engage in discussions focused on international cooperation, economic policies, and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Engagement with US Leaders
During his visit, Lammy will meet with Vice President JD Vance to reinforce the UK-US special relationship, aiming to foster economic growth and stability on both sides of the Atlantic. The discussions will also encompass Europe’s contribution to achieving lasting peace in Ukraine, spotlighting the need for collaborative efforts in addressing global challenges.
Lammy intends to reflect on his own experiences in America during an America 250 event at Mount Vernon. He will share insights on how his time studying in Massachusetts and working in California has shaped his career in public service, while also elucidating the future prospects for bilateral relations.
Time Capsule Ceremony
A highlight of the celebrations will be the presentation of the UK’s contribution to a time capsule, which will be interred beneath the Washington Monument. This is part of a larger initiative that follows the recent burial of a corresponding capsule in Trafalgar Square, London. Notably, the capsule will include artefacts from Virginia’s ‘Expressions of Freedom’ student competition, alongside a limestone Capstone, sourced from the original George Washington statue plinth in London and engraved with thirteen stars symbolising Washington’s Headquarters Flag.
Future Engagements and Judicial Reforms
After his engagements in Washington, Lammy will head to Toronto to investigate the implementation of judge-alone trials in Ontario. This visit aims to gather insights that may influence potential reforms in the judicial processes of England and Wales, with discussions planned with local judiciary leaders and the Attorney General of Ontario.
Background
- The America 250 programme invites reflection on American history and promotes a renewed commitment to democratic ideals.
