£600,000 Allocated for Windrush Compensation Advocacy Support
The UK government has announced an additional £600,000 for the second year of the Windrush Compensation Advocacy Support Fund (WCASF), aimed at helping victims of the Windrush scandal navigate the compensation claim process. This funding supports community organisations that assist individuals dealing with the emotional and practical challenges of framing their experiences and claims.
Continuing Support for Victims
Many individuals affected by the Windrush scandal have expressed that recounting their traumatic experiences complicates the process of seeking justice. The advocacy support provided by this fund is designed to help claimants articulate their stories while also offering assistance in gathering necessary evidence and connecting with other services.
Mike Tapp MP, Minister for Migration and Citizenship, highlighted the importance of this fund, stating that many victims face great difficulty when navigating the claims process alone. “That’s why we set up a fund to provide dedicated support so victims can receive the justice they deserve,” he remarked. With the success in the fund’s first year, Tapp is optimistic that the further investment will enhance community-driven support.
Background on the Windrush Scandal
The Windrush scandal involved individuals who had made their homes in the UK, only to be unjustly classified as illegal immigrants by the government. Affected individuals encountered job losses, healthcare denials, and threats of deportation, leading to significant financial stress and mental health decline. The WCASF is part of the government’s broader commitment to address these issues and deepen engagement with affected communities.
Application Process for Support
Organisations interested in applying for funding can participate in virtual information sessions scheduled for 15 and 23 January 2026. Applications must be submitted by 5pm on 6 February 2026 via the Find and Apply Grant portal, as part of the commitment to ongoing support for those impacted by this historical injustice.
