Major Water Supply Disruptions Across South East England
A significant water crisis has unfolded in South East England, with thousands of residents in Kent facing severe shortages. The Kent County Council (KCC) has officially designated this situation a major incident, attributing the disruption to severe weather conditions due to Storm Goretti and a power failure affecting pumping stations.
Extent of the Outages
As of now, both Southern Water and South East Water (SEW) reported that numerous areas across Kent, Surrey, and Sussex are grappling with inadequate water supply. KCC leader Linden Kemkaran indicated that the situation has deteriorated in the past day, affecting even more households.
The crisis has resulted in the closing of schools in Kent and Sussex on what should have been a normal weekday. Notably, last month, 24,000 homes in Tunbridge Wells endured several days without running water and nearly two weeks without access to potable water.

According to Mike Martin, MP for Tunbridge Wells, around 16,000 properties in East Grinstead alone are currently affected. SEW has noted that water supply restoration in East Grinstead and surrounding areas is not anticipated until Tuesday.
Underlying Causes of the Outages
The water supply issues have been largely blamed on the adverse effects of Storm Goretti, which hindered the normal operations at major water treatment facilities in Sussex. SEW has reported an escalation in burst water mains, brought on by freezing temperatures, leading to diminished levels in drinking water storage.
Mike Court from SEW acknowledged the disruptions faced by customers, expressing regret for the inconvenience caused. He explained that the extreme weather conditions have resulted in service outages at several sites and complications in maintaining adequate water quality.

In response to the ongoing crisis, several bottled water distribution points have been established to assist local residents until normal supply is restored. The following locations are available for those in need:
