UK-Uganda Partnership Celebrated at High Commissioner’s Event
A recent reception hosted by H.E. Lisa Chesney MBE, the British High Commissioner to Uganda, marked the celebration of His Majesty King Charles III’s 77th birthday while highlighting the growing partnership between the UK and Uganda. The event, which brought together various stakeholders, underlined the commitment to climate action and environmental protection.
Tribute to Leadership and Public Service
During the evening, High Commissioner Chesney commended King Charles III for his enduring commitment to public service and as a global voice for environmental sustainability. She emphasised his notable advocacy for climate action, a cause that resonates deeply with Uganda’s ecological priorities.
His Majesty King Charles III has long championed the protection of our planet, earning recognition for his unwavering commitment to environmental sustainability, biodiversity, and climate action. As we celebrate his 77th birthday, we also celebrate a shared vision with Uganda of a greener, more sustainable future for all.
Wildlife and Climate Focus
This year’s festivities prominently featured an exhibition dedicated to wildlife and nature, celebrating the robust collaboration between the UK and Uganda in addressing climate challenges. Attendees were treated to a selection of stunning images from the Natural History Museum’s prestigious Wildlife Photographer of the Year competition, showcasing Uganda’s diverse ecosystems and rich biodiversity.
The event coincided with COP30, serving as a timely reminder of the shared responsibility for climate action amid ongoing global discussions about environmental preservation and sustainability.
UK’s Commitment to Climate Goals
The UK government is resolute in its plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, supported by a legally binding Net Zero strategy. This commitment not only aims to address climate change but is also seen as a catalyst for economic growth. Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer, speaking at COP30, stressed the necessity of embracing change to tackle climate issues effectively.
You don’t protect jobs and communities by sticking with the status quo. You don’t meet a challenge like climate change by standing still – you do it by embracing change, embracing the opportunities and doing it together.
Significant Achievements Recognised
The evening also acknowledged notable achievements resulting from UK-Uganda collaborations, including:
- Training over 1,300 Ugandan health workers through UK initiatives
- Promoting clean cooking technologies to over 20 million citizens
- Supporting the employment of over 20,000 individuals through more than 50 British Chamber of Commerce businesses operating in Uganda
- Facilitating US$22 million in private investment for Uganda’s agro-industrialisation
- Building vital infrastructure, with UK Export Finance investments reaching almost £800 million
Cultural Celebration and Community Recognition
The reception was a vibrant showcase of British and Ugandan cultures, featuring music and culinary delights that celebrated the enduring friendship between the two nations. Moreover, it served as an opportunity to recognise the contributions of the Ugandan-British community and the diaspora, whose efforts continue to bridge cultural and developmental gaps.
Ongoing Engagement in Climate Finance
As COP30 progresses, the UK remains committed to mobilising vital climate finance for Uganda. The celebration reinforced the significance of unity and diplomacy in tackling one of the most pressing issues of our time, climate change.
