Rescue Operation Saves Man Stranded on Inflatable Mattress in Firth of Forth
Lifeboat crews successfully rescued a man who became stranded on an inflatable mattress off the Edinburgh coast on Sunday morning. The incident occurred at approximately 9.18am, east of Cramond Island, prompting a response from the Queensferry RNLI Lifeboat.
Emergency Response
The man, who was fully clothed, had fallen into the cold waters of the Firth of Forth, with a temperature hovering around 7°C. Despite the chilly conditions, he managed to climb back onto the air mattress, where he remained for an extended period. Having been on the water since around 8am, he was found to be “wet and extremely cold” upon rescue.
The volunteer rescue team promptly located the individual, bringing him aboard the lifeboat. Immediate care was administered, as it became clear that he required warmth and medical assistance. Consequently, an ambulance was requested, and the lifeboat accelerated towards Granton Harbour in north Edinburgh.
Life-Saving Efforts
Upon arrival at the harbour, the man was handed over to the Scottish Ambulance Service and its special operations response team, alongside the South Queensferry Coastguard Rescue Team. Stewart Atkinson, a volunteer helm with the RNLI, noted the urgency of the situation, stating, “It was lucky that we got there when we did, as the casualty was extremely cold and was drifting further offshore.”
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with using inflatable devices in coastal waters. Atkinson emphasised the importance of understanding that such items are primarily designed for pools, as they can quickly be swept away in sea conditions.
Safety Advisory
Atkinson also urged those venturing into the water to remain vigilant regarding weather forecasts and tidal conditions, as local inshore environments may appear calm while conditions can deteriorate just offshore. He recommended that individuals wear personal flotation devices and suitable clothing for the weather. In case of emergencies, he advised the public to call 999 and request the Coastguard.
