Fog Warning Issued Across Parts of England and Wales
A yellow warning for fog has been put in place for various regions in England and Wales, prompting potential travel disruptions. This alert is valid until 7am on Friday and primarily affects areas north of Merthyr Tydfil in Wales, along with sections of the West Midlands and North West England, stretching from Hereford to Lancaster.
Travel Disruptions Expected
According to the Met Office, fog conditions are anticipated to worsen on Thursday evening, with visibility dropping below 100 metres in some areas. In light of these conditions, motorists are advised to verify travel situations prior to embarking on their journeys. The weather forecast indicates that not only road transport may be affected, but also bus and train services, as well as flights and ferry crossings.
The dense fog is expected to gradually thin and transition into low cloud cover late Thursday night or early Friday morning.
Airport Forecasts and Impact
Current assessments at both Manchester and Liverpool airports indicate a significant risk of fog that could impact flight schedules. The latest Terminal Aerodrome Forecast (TAF) for Manchester Airport projects deteriorating conditions overnight, with a 40% chance of fog that could reduce visibility to 300 metres. Similarly, Liverpool John Lennon Airport faces a 30% chance of fog, which may also lower visibility to below 300 metres.
However, forecasters suggest that visibility should improve by Friday morning in both locations.
Additional Weather Warnings
Alongside the fog warning, the Met Office has also issued a yellow warning for rain across much of southern and southeast England, valid until 10pm on Thursday. This comes in the wake of predictions for heavy rainfall on already saturated ground, raising concerns about potential flooding. Estimates indicate that some areas could receive between 4 to 5 cm (approximately 1.57 to 1.96 inches) of rain, coupled with gusts reaching around 50mph in exposed coastal regions.
