New Cyber Facilities to Strengthen Army’s Capabilities in Gloucestershire
The British Army is set to enhance its cyber warfare capabilities with a new £279 million investment aimed at modernising facilities at Duke of Gloucester Barracks in Gloucestershire. The initiative will create specialised infrastructure for the 13 Signal Regiment, which focuses on defensive cyber operations, alongside new living accommodations for service personnel.
Investment Overview
The recently signed contract will fund the construction of 248 Single Living Accommodation units and 30 Service Family Accommodation homes, significantly improving housing for military families. In addition to residential spaces, modern training and technical facilities will be built, providing soldiers with the necessary resources to effectively counter cyber threats.
Economic Impact
This significant investment is expected to foster local economic growth, including the creation of 92 jobs, with opportunities specifically aimed at ex-military personnel. Approximately 32 apprenticeship positions will also be made available, integrating structured training programs aimed at supporting the defence sector as an economic driver.
Local Business Participation
- 25% of the overall spending is pledged to businesses located within a 50-mile radius of the barracks.
- 25% of the construction workforce will be drawn from local communities.
- 40% of offsite manufacturing will take place within 40 miles of the site.
- 25% of the project’s funding is earmarked for small and medium enterprises.
Strategic Defence Initiatives
In light of recent threats, including over 90,000 cyber attacks aimed at UK military networks in the past two years, this investment aligns with the Strategic Defence Review (SDR), which underscores the significance of cyber and electromagnetic warfare. As part of these modernisation efforts, a new Cyber and Electromagnetic Command is set to be established, reinforcing the UK’s posture in the realm of cyber operations.
Construction is projected to commence in Summer 2027, with plans for completion by Spring 2030 to coincide with the regiment’s transition to the newly upgraded facilities.
