Ukrainians Endure Severe Cold Amid Energy Crisis
As temperatures plummet to -15C, many Ukrainians are left without power, prompting President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to announce an emergency declaration for the country’s energy sector. Repair teams are working around the clock in an effort to restore electricity and heating, especially in Kyiv, one of the areas hit hardest by Russia’s ongoing attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.

Emergency crews in the Kyiv region are striving to repair the extensive damage caused by recent assaults on the national power grid. Officials reported on Wednesday that these efforts are crucial, as the region faces dire consequences from both Russian strikes and increasingly severe winter weather. Zelenskyy highlighted the situation on social media, emphasizing the “severe” effects of the dual crises.
According to Yurii Bryzh, who oversees the Boryspil regional department of the private electricity provider DTEK, repair workers are braving harsh weather conditions to mend burned-out electrical systems, stating that they have managed to provide power for just four hours each day. He warned that when power is restored, residents often use too much energy at once, causing the system to fail again.
Coping with the Cold
Residents in Kyiv, including families like that of Mykhailo, 39, and his wife Hanna, 43, are struggling through the harsh winter. They reported that their young daughter’s room has plummeted to -15C, forcing the family to huddle together under heavy blankets for warmth. In an alarming statement, Anton Gerashchenko, a former adviser to Ukraine’s internal affairs minister, explained that hospitals in the city are resorting to autonomous boiler systems to maintain temperatures for patients and avert a potential humanitarian disaster.
Other residents have devised their own methods for coping with the cold. Zinaida Hlyha, aged 76, said she heats water on her gas stove and fills bottles to stay warm in bed. She expressed gratitude that soldiers on the front lines have it much worse.
Government Initiatives and Concerns
Kyiv’s mayor, Vitali Klitschko, noted that heating services have been restored to nearly all but around 400 of the 6,000 affected buildings in the city, indicating that support centres are operating continuously to assist those in need. However, the challenges remain significant, with many families still facing freezing conditions.
Ukraine’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has accused Russia of conducting a “deliberate campaign against civilian life,” underscoring that attacks on energy infrastructure have intensified during the harsh winter months when warmth becomes essential for survival. Their statement on social media branded these actions as “cynical, life-denying terror.”

In the midst of these struggles, Russia has responded critically to a UK initiative to supply new ground-launched missiles to Ukraine, as tensions escalate over various security issues in the region. European nations continue to band together in support of Ukraine, particularly after controversy arose over remarks made by Donald Trump suggesting that Zelenskyy is less inclined to seek peace compared to Moscow.
