Essential Refurbishment Works Scheduled for Widewater Lagoon Mitigation Pipe
The Environment Agency has announced plans to commence refurbishment of the mitigation pipe at Widewater Lagoon, a designated Local Wildlife Site near Lancing, West Sussex, starting in late January 2026. This critical work aims to maintain water levels that support the lagoon’s diverse wildlife and will run until the end of March 2026.
Importance of the Mitigation Pipe
The mitigation pipe serves a vital function by facilitating the flow of seawater into the lagoon during high tides, which is essential for preserving ecological balance. Recent inspections revealed that both the pipe’s seaward section and its supporting timber frame require replacement to ensure continued functionality.
Funding and Community Engagement
The refurbishment project is being financed through the existing budget allocated for beach management along the Shoreham and Lancing coastline. Andy Manville from the Environment Agency emphasised the lagoon’s significance as a habitat for numerous species, noting the importance of this operation for both local wildlife and visitors.
Local Support and Collaboration
Throughout the planning phase, the Environment Agency has collaborated extensively with local stakeholders, including Tom Rutland MP, the World of Widewater (WoW) committee, and both Lancing Parish Council and Adur & Worthing Council. Manville acknowledged the contributions of local partners and the community while assuring efforts to minimise disruption during construction.
What Residents and Visitors Should Know
The Environment Agency has expressed appreciation for the community’s patience during this necessary work and apologised for any potential disruption. Residents and visitors are encouraged to stay informed and to reach out for any queries regarding the project.
