Former Councillor Jailed for Stalking Ex-Minister Penny Mordaunt
Edward Brandt, a 61-year-old former councillor, has been sentenced to 20 weeks in prison after being convicted of stalking Dame Penny Mordaunt, a prominent figure in UK politics. Between September 11, 2023, and May 12, 2024, he sent a total of 17 emails and made three phone calls to her, in addition to visiting her constituency office in Portsmouth after hours.
During the trial, the court heard that Dame Penny perceived Brandt as a “real threat” and expressed fears concerning potential sexual violence due to his “creepy” actions. This alarming behaviour necessitated a response from the legal system.
Failure to Comply with Caution
Brandt was living on the Isle of Wight at the time of the incidents and had previously been issued a conditional caution in April 2024, requiring him to attend a victim awareness course and abstain from any contact with Dame Penny. However, he disregarded these stipulations by leaving two voicemail messages for her on May 6 and May 10, in which he indicated his intent to persist in attempting to meet her.
In one message, he stated, “I am going to go on gently knocking at your door in order to shake your hand, I am not giving up,” highlighting his refusal to respect the boundaries set by the court.
Legal Implications
Following his conviction, Brandt was also placed under an interim stalking protection order on July 16, 2024, by Isle of Wight Magistrates’ Court. This order aims to prevent any further harassment and ensure the safety of the victim.
