Darlington to Host New Government Hub as Construction Begins
A significant step has been taken towards establishing a new five-storey office aimed at housing over 1,600 civil servants in Darlington. The ground-breaking ceremony for the Government Hub took place on January 16, attended by key officials including Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves and Cabinet Office Minister Anna Turley.
Government Hub Details
The new facility, which will occupy Brunswick Street, is part of the Government Property Agency’s (GPA) initiative and is anticipated to open in the first quarter of 2028. It will serve as the permanent location for the Darlington Economic Campus (DEC), where staff from seven government departments—most notably HM Treasury—will be employed.
Statements from Officials
During the ceremony, Chancellor Rachel Reeves remarked on the positive impact of the Darlington Economic Campus, noting its contribution of skilled jobs and economic benefits to the region. She stated that the new hub reflects a commitment to decentralising economic decision-making beyond Westminster.
Anna Turley, the Minister of State at the Cabinet Office, highlighted the significance of this development in enhancing the proximity of the Civil Service to local communities. She mentioned the government’s “Places for Growth” programme, which aims to create quality job opportunities outside London, thus fostering economic development nationwide.
Building Specifications
According to Simon Hulme, Director of Capital Projects at the GPA, the construction of the Government Hub signifies a pivotal achievement for the agency. He expressed enthusiasm about providing a modern, sustainable office environment that will accommodate a large workforce and support the goals of the Darlington Economic Campus.
Contractual Agreements and Expected Impact
Kier Group has been appointed as the lead contractor for the project, having recently initiated ground remediation activities at the site. Chief Executive Officer Stuart Togwell stated his company’s pride in contributing to the development, which aims to generate substantial economic and social benefits for the local area.
DEC is building on the existing 750 roles in the Department for Education, having already attracted more than 1,000 additional civil servants to Darlington. Besides the Department for Education and HM Treasury, other departments involved include the Office for National Statistics, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, and several others.
Background
This initiative is part of a broader commitment by the UK government to decentralise civil service operations, creating regional job opportunities and stimulating local economies. The development of the Government Hub is consistent with the Government Hubs Programme, which focuses on renovating brownfield sites and repurposing existing structures to enhance workplace efficiency and sustainability.
