UK Launches Innovative Undergraduate Drone Degree Program
A new undergraduate degree in drone technology will aim to fast-track aspiring engineers into careers within advanced military technology. The New Model Institute for Technology and Engineering (NMITE) in Hereford is set to commence the programme in September 2026, supported by a £240,000 investment from the British Army.
Training Military and Civilian Professionals
This three-year course is designed to train 15 civilian students annually, alongside five military personnel, to become specialists in drone technology. Following the recent conflict in Ukraine, the UK government has underlined the importance of developing capabilities to counter the growing threat of uncrewed devices in modern warfare.
The new degree aligns with the recently introduced Armed Forces Bill, which enhances Defence’s capacity to manage drone threats effectively. It is part of a broader initiative to realise the goals outlined in the Strategic Defence Review, which focuses on increasing the UK’s military effectiveness through the integration of artificial intelligence, drones, and autonomous systems.
Building a Skilled Workforce
In a bid to ensure young people acquire vital skills for success in Defence sectors, the government has set a goal for two-thirds of individuals to either pursue degrees or obtain gold-standard apprenticeships by age 25. To support this aim, the establishment of five Technical Excellence Colleges specifically dedicated to Defence training has been announced.
Minister for the Armed Forces Al Carns MP remarked on the significance of drones in contemporary combat, stating, “In Ukraine, drones are causing more casualties than artillery. This degree offers new engineers a pathway to vital careers.” He further emphasised that graduates would bolster the UK Armed Forces while driving advancements in both military and civilian drone technology.
Regional Investment and Economic Growth
Located in Hereford, the NMITE programme will contribute to transforming the area into what some are calling Britain’s ‘military Silicon Valley’. This initiative is not only aimed at improving Defence capabilities but also at fostering regional economic growth.
Minister for Skills Jacqui Smith MP highlighted the programme as a crucial contributor to the UK’s skills landscape, aimed at nurturing the talents of young individuals while simultaneously generating job opportunities within Defence.
CEO of NMITE, James Newby, expressed enthusiasm about the programme’s potential, stating it represents a significant opportunity to equip the next generation of engineers with essential skills that will positively impact both security and regional development.
As expressions of interest for the course are now welcomed, prospective students can register for updates regarding the programme, which kicks off in September 2026.
