New Housing Development Planned for Former City Hospital Site in Birmingham
Homes England has confirmed a partnership with Vistry to develop 750 new homes and a convenience retail store on the former City Hospital site in Birmingham. The project will see the majority of existing hospital structures demolished to make way for 698 new residential units, supplemented by the conversion of the old infirmary into 52 additional apartments.
Project Details and Timeline
The approved plans by Vistry include 35% of the new homes designated as affordable, aimed at addressing local housing shortages. The demolition of the existing hospital facilities is set to commence following asbestos removal in December 2025. Construction on the new housing is projected to start in the latter half of 2026, with the first units expected to be ready by early 2027.
Collaboration Among Stakeholders
The initiative required extensive cooperation between multiple public bodies, including Homes England, Sandwell and West Birmingham NHS Trust, and Birmingham City Council. With the site fully vacated as patients and staff transitioned to the newly opened Midland Metropolitan Hospital in October 2024, the path for redevelopment is now clear.
