Police Officer Acquitted in High-Speed Pursuit Fatality Case
A police officer accused of dangerous and careless driving, leading to the death of a civilian during a high-speed chase, has been acquitted. Matthew Pike, aged 40, broke down in tears after being found not guilty of all charges related to the fatal incident involving Keryl Johnson in November 2021.
Circumstances of the Incident
The Bristol Crown Court heard that on the night of November 4, 2021, Pc Pike was pursuing a white Volkswagen Tiguan driven by Lewis Griffin through the city centre. During the pursuit, the officer reportedly reached speeds of up to 93 miles per hour in his unmarked BMW police car. The chase concluded tragically when Griffin’s vehicle collided with a Honda Jazz operated by Keryl Johnson, who was a general practitioner.
Ms Johnson suffered severe injuries and passed away several days later in hospital.
Trial Proceedings
During the trial, legal representatives for Pc Pike successfully argued his case, leading Judge Edward Burgess KC to determine that the prosecution failed to prove their allegations. Judge Burgess pointed out that expert testimony clearly indicated that Pike did not drive in a dangerous or careless manner at any point during the pursuit. The judge noted that Pike had acted in accordance with his training for police chases.
Judge’s Ruling
In his ruling, Judge Burgess expressed the emotional weight of the case, describing it as “incredibly sad and utterly tragic.” He stated that following his findings, the jury had no choice but to declare Matthew Pike not guilty of both counts against him.

In a related legal development, Lewis Griffin, aged 23, received an eight-year prison sentence in February 2024 after pleading guilty to causing death by dangerous driving. In addition to his incarceration, he has been banned from driving for a decade.
