UK, US, and Canada Collaborate to Strengthen Lebanese Border Security
In a significant diplomatic engagement, the British, US, and Canadian ambassadors convened with General Rudolf Haykal, Commander in Chief of the Lebanese Armed Forces (LAF), at the High-Level Steering Committee (HLSC) to discuss ongoing efforts to secure Lebanon’s northern and eastern borders.
Reaffirming Support for the Lebanese Armed Forces
The meeting focused on assessing the progress and challenges faced by the LAF in its mission to enhance state authority in a time of considerable uncertainty. The UK has provided backing to the LAF since 2013, contributing to the establishment of 84 operational bases on the Syrian border. Recently, six additional bases were constructed as part of ongoing efforts aimed at bolstering border protection against smuggling and other illegal activities.
Steadfast Commitment to Stability
Ambassador Hamish Cowell emphasized the UK’s unwavering commitment to the crucial role played by the LAF in maintaining security and stability in Lebanon, especially in the southern regions. He acknowledged progress towards establishing a state monopoly on arms, a fundamental step towards ensuring a secure and stable Lebanon.
Statements from the British Ambassador
In remarks following the meeting, Ambassador Cowell expressed pride in meeting General Haykal and commended the LAF for their professionalism and resilience in safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty amid ongoing challenges. He noted:
It was an honour to meet General Haykal and review progress on Lebanon’s border security. The Lebanese Armed Forces have shown exceptional professionalism and resilience in safeguarding Lebanon’s sovereignty during these challenging times.
He further stated the importance of ongoing collaboration among the UK, US, Canadian partners, and the wider international community to enhance Lebanon’s security and territorial integrity.
