Russia Intensifies Attacks Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues into another year, new statistics reveal a disturbing trend of escalating violence and civilian casualties. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission, in 2025, Russian military actions resulted in the deaths of over 2,500 Ukrainian civilians and injured more than 12,000. This marks a significant increase from previous years, underscoring the intensifying nature of the conflict.
Escalation of Military Assaults
The data indicates that Russia’s military strategy has shifted dramatically, with a marked increase in the use of drones and missiles. From June to December 2025, an average of more than 5,300 drones were launched each month—a statistic that is over five times greater than the average in 2024. The total number of missiles fired at Ukrainian cities throughout 2025 surpassed 1,900, revealing a concerted effort aimed at both destruction and instilling fear among the population.
Mass Attacks and Civilian Infrastructure Targeted
Last year, Russia escalated its tactics with unprecedented mass attacks. Following attending peace negotiations in Istanbul in May, Russia conducted 39 significant assaults, with some days witnessing over 600 drones and missiles launched in unison. These aggressive maneuvers suggest a blatant disregard for peace talks and a clear intent to overwhelm Ukrainian defences.
Moreover, the ongoing assault on civilian infrastructure has resulted in catastrophic outcomes. In 2025, nearly 600 health facilities in Ukraine were struck, comprising 42% of all healthcare-related attacks across the globe. The systematic targeting of hospitals and medical workers presents a disturbing pattern of behaviour that international observers have condemned.
Impacts on Energy and Living Conditions
The relentless attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure continue to trigger a severe humanitarian crisis. Recent drone strikes, including one affecting Kyiv, have led to extensive damage to energy facilities, leaving millions facing electricity shortages, water supply issues, and inadequate heating during harsh winter conditions. To date, over 63,000 energy installations have been compromised, resulting in a catastrophic loss of 70% of Ukraine’s pre-war energy generation capabilities.
No Signs of Diplomatic Resolution
The current situation highlights a profound lack of willingness from Russia’s leadership to negotiate an end to hostilities. All indications suggest that there are no credible attempts by Russia to seek a peaceful resolution, casting doubt on the prospects for future dialogue. Despite this, Ukraine and its allies remain committed to achieving a fair and lasting peace that respects Ukraine’s sovereignty and upholds international laws.
As the UK continues to navigate these developments, its support for Ukraine remains firm. This includes aid to enhance Ukraine’s self-defence capabilities and safeguard its citizens amid ongoing aggression.
