Honoring Dedication: Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit Awarded to Local Cadets
On 15 January, a prestigious ceremony took place at the Elephant and Castle Hotel in Newtown, where three individuals were presented with the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit by Mrs Tia Jones. This recognition celebrates their significant contributions and unwavering commitment to community service.
Celebrating Young Achievements
The event was also an opportunity to acknowledge the accomplishments of two exemplary cadets, Cadet Staff Sergeant Harry Agnew from the Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force and Cadet Warrant Officer Max Morgan of No 2 Welsh Wing RAF Air Cadets. Both cadets shared their experiences and milestones from the past year, highlighting their roles as Lord-Lieutenant cadets.
In their esteemed positions, the cadets frequently accompanied the Lord-Lieutenant of Powys, who acts as the King’s representative, at various formal events, including Remembrance ceremonies, royal visits, and military parades.
Selecting the Cadets
Harry Agnew and Max Morgan were selected for the Lord-Lieutenant’s cadet roles based on nominations from their group leaders and the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales. They are following in the footsteps of Cadet Flight Sergeant Lexie Young, who received the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate and Badge for her representation during the 2024/25 term.
Acknowledging Service and Commitment
The awards ceremony also honoured Reservist Warrant Officer Mark Collacott from the 160th (Welsh) Brigade, Staff Sergeant Ian Corstorphine, and Warrant Officer Christopher Thompson, both associated with the Gwent and Powys Army Cadet Force, each receiving the Lord-Lieutenant’s Certificate of Merit.
Additionally, Captain Paul Jones of Gwent and Powys ACF was granted the 5th Clasp to the Cadet Forces Medal, recognising an impressive 42 years of service within the Army Cadet Force.
Promotions and Growth in Cadet Corps
Two significant promotions were also announced during the evening. Cadet Staff Sergeant Harry Agnew advanced to the position of Cadet Company Sergeant Major, while Cadet Sergeant Megan Williams, also from Gwent and Powys ACF, progressed to Cadet Staff Sergeant.
Currently, over 4,500 cadets in Wales participate in various practical activities, developing essential skills and qualifications through community engagement and charitable work. This initiative is supported by 1,850 adult volunteers who contribute their time on weekdays and weekends.
Importance of the Ceremony
The ceremony was organised by the Reserve Forces’ and Cadets’ Association for Wales, an organisation with a long history of supporting the Armed Forces, having served for over a century. Events like this not only recognise individual achievements but also foster a sense of community and commitment to service across the UK.
