New Competition Launched to Address Conflict Wounds in UK Defence
The UK Defence Innovation (UKDI) has initiated a themed competition titled “Conflict Wounds: From Biology to Battlefield Solutions,” aiming to encourage innovations that can model and treat wounds resulting from conflict. Funded by the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) and the Ministry of Defence’s Defence Medical Services (DMS), the initiative offers up to £1.5 million in funding.
Funding Details and Submission Timeline
With a budget of approximately £1.5 million, this competition is designed to support 5 to 7 innovative proposals, with expected funding amounts ranging from £200,000 to £300,000 each. However, proposals with different budgetary needs may also be considered. The deadline for submission is set for midday (GMT) on 24 March 2026.
Identified Challenges
The competition seeks to address two primary concerns within the medical community:
- The insufficient availability of effective models to study the causes of conflict wounds and to test new therapeutic options.
- The urgent demand for innovative treatments that can reduce morbidity and enhance outcomes for patients suffering from complex injuries sustained in conflict situations.
Areas of Focus
Participants are invited to propose advancements in two key challenge areas:
- Challenge 1: Modelling conflict wounds
- Challenge 2: Treating conflict wounds
Proposals should demonstrate their relevance to injuries affecting the skin, muscle, or bone, particularly in the extremities and torso, and showcase the potential for practical applications in a defence context.
Support and Engagement Opportunities
To aid potential applicants, UKDI plans to host a launch webinar on 10 February 2026. This session will provide insights into the competition and allow participants to ask questions. In addition, one-to-one teleconference sessions will be available on 18 and 24 February 2026 for in-depth technical discussions with the competition team.
Registration for Events
Interested individuals can register for the launch webinar through UKDI’s Eventbrite page. Slots for the one-to-one sessions will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis, commencing the day after the launch webinar.
Importance of the Initiative
The ongoing evolution of conflict and the implications for military personnel necessitate continuous advancements in medical treatments for conflict-related injuries. This competition not only aims to foster innovation in medical solutions but also highlights the UK’s commitment to enhancing the healthcare of its armed forces.
