Chris Brown Appears in Court Over Alleged Bottle Assault
US musician Chris Brown attended a brief court session at London’s Southwark Crown Court regarding an alleged assault involving a bottle at a nightclub. The 36-year-old singer confirmed his identity during the preliminary hearing, presided over by Judge Tony Baumgartner.
Details of the Case
Brown has entered a plea of not guilty to assault occasioning actual bodily harm, stemming from an incident described by prosecutors as an “unprovoked attack” on a former associate, Abraham Diaw, at the Tape private club in Mayfair in February 2023. Additionally, he has denied charges related to possessing an offensive weapon—a bottle— and attempting to inflict grievous bodily harm during the venue’s Dirty Martini club night.
During the hearing, Brown was dressed in a white jacket over a black shirt, complemented by grey trousers, and was flanked by security as he arrived at the courthouse. He greeted his co-defendant, vocal coach Omololu Akinlolu, 39, who faces the same charge of assault and has also pleaded not guilty.
Trial Preparation
The hearing lasted approximately eight minutes, during which lawyers updated the court on the progress of the case’s preparations. Bail conditions for both defendants were reaffirmed.
Background and Context
Chris Brown, a two-time Grammy winner known for hits such as “Run It” and “With You,” was granted bail in the previous year after providing a £5 million security deposit. This bail agreement allowed him to continue his scheduled tours, though he was mandated to surrender his passport upon entering each country.
The singer was taken into custody by Metropolitan Police at the Lowry Hotel in Manchester in the early hours of May 15 last year. A dozen supporters were present in the courtroom, and Brown acknowledged them with a wave as he exited.
Another pre-trial hearing for both defendants is slated for April, with the trial itself scheduled to commence in October.
