Man Convicted for Explosive Attack on ULEZ Camera in Sidcup
A retired engineer has been found guilty of detonating a makeshift bomb aimed at an ultra-low emission zone (ULEZ) camera in Sidcup, south-east London. Kevin Rees was convicted after a jury determined he caused an explosion that endangered lives and damaged nearby properties.
Explosion Details
The incident occurred on 6 December 2023, when Rees set off the improvised explosive device at approximately 6:45 PM. The explosion not only destroyed the camera situated on Willersley Avenue but also caused damage to vehicles and residential properties within a 100-metre radius, including a child’s bedroom, according to the Metropolitan Police.
Court Proceedings
The Woolwich Crown Court jury found Rees guilty of one count of causing an explosion likely to endanger life. Following the explosion, law enforcement officers traced Rees’s movements, which included travelling from his home to the explosion site shortly before the event.
Investigation and Arrest
Rees was apprehended on 18 December after police discovered three homemade stun guns at his residence. His arrest followed witness accounts that placed him at the scene, where he was seen walking away after igniting the device.
Motivations and Social Media Activity
In the lead-up to his actions, Rees had been vocally opposed to the ULEZ scheme, endorsing damage to the cameras on social media. The ULEZ initiative, which expanded to cover all of London in 2023, aims to improve air quality by regulating vehicle emissions.
Public Safety Concern
Detective Superintendent James Derham emphasised the potential dangers of Rees’s actions, noting the explosion could have resulted in serious injuries or fatalities. He stated that Rees’s actions showed a complete disregard for the safety of local residents and drivers.
Legal Implications
Bethan David, from the Crown Prosecution Service’s counter-terrorism division, reinforced the severity of the incident, describing it as a premeditated attack on public infrastructure rather than mere vandalism. Rees faces further sentencing at a future date after his conviction.
Background
The ULEZ scheme has been controversial since its inception, facing opposition from various quarters. As London strives to enhance air quality and reduce pollution, vandalism against ULEZ cameras has become an increasing issue, drawing attention to the tensions surrounding environmental regulations.
