Police Officer Charged Following Fatal Collision on Christmas Eve
A police officer from Merseyside faces charges in connection with the tragic death of a young woman who was struck by his patrol vehicle while he was responding to an emergency call. The incident occurred on Christmas Eve, three years ago.
Details of the Incident
PC Scott Thompson, aged 32, is set to appear in court next week to face charges of causing death by careless driving. The tragic incident involved 22-year-old Rachael Moore, a carer, who was hit by the police car on Sheil Road shortly after 8 PM on December 24, 2022.
At the time of the collision, PC Thompson was responding to an emergency call that was unrelated to the situation involving Ms Moore. The victim, originally from Derby, had just finished her shift and was on her way home from work when she was struck. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The charge against PC Thompson follows an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), which was initiated after a mandatory referral from Merseyside Police in the wake of the incident. The IOPC conducted a thorough inquiry, collaborating with the Crown Prosecution Service throughout the process to determine if any criminal charges were warranted.
As a result of these investigations, the charge against the officer was approved last month. He is scheduled to appear at Manchester Magistrates’ Court on Monday.
Background
This case highlights the serious implications of police conduct during emergency responses and underscores the importance of accountability in law enforcement. Incidents involving police vehicles have raised concerns over public safety and the responsibilities of officers while on duty.
