Bristol Museum Artefacts Stolen in Significant Burglary
A man has been taken into custody following the theft of over 600 artefacts from a museum in Bristol. The individual, aged 41, is under investigation for possession of stolen goods, having been released shortly after his arrest.

The incident occurred on 25th September of last year at a facility housing items from the British Empire and Commonwealth collection of Bristol Museum. Avon and Somerset Police believe that a group of four men gained access to the site in the early hours, between 1 and 2 a.m.
Stolen Artefacts
Authorities have classified the stolen items as possessing “significant cultural value.” The collection includes:
- Medals
- Badges and pins
- Jewellery
- Decorative pieces, such as carved ivory, silver items, and bronze figurines
Notable missing pieces include a carved ivory elephant, an ivory Buddha statue, a ship lantern, and an Emancipation token, all of which were released in images by Bristol City Council.
Police Investigations
In an ongoing effort to resolve the case, police have appealed for the public’s assistance in identifying the suspects. Video footage featuring the individuals in question has been made public.

Detective Constable Dan Burgan remarked that the theft constitutes a “significant loss for the city.” He highlighted the importance of these artefacts, many of which were donated, as they form a critical part of Bristol’s historical tapestry.

In response to the theft, security protocols at the museum have been strengthened. Police have described the suspects involved as all being white, with distinctive clothing that might help in their identification.
The descriptions provided include:
- Medium to stocky build, wearing a white cap and a black jacket.
- Slim build, clad in a grey hooded jacket.
- Wearing a green cap and black jacket, noted for a slight limp.
- Large build, donning a two-toned orange and navy puffed jacket.
