England Braces for More Heavy Rain After Days of Flooding
Parts of England are set to experience further heavy rainfall next week, following a period of persistent downpours that have already saturated many areas. The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for the South West, beginning midday on Monday and lasting until 9am on Tuesday.
Current Conditions
Recent stormy weather has left tens of thousands of residents in Cornwall temporarily without power early in January. As of Saturday evening, there were 57 flood warnings and 117 alerts across the southern regions of England, even before the new rainfall warning takes effect.
Earlier this week, Somerset declared a major incident after approximately 50 properties were affected by flooding due to Storm Chandra, drawing attention to the ongoing risks associated with the severe weather.
Forecast and Implications
The Met Office predicts that rainfall accumulations could reach 10-20mm in much of the South West, with the potential for 30-50mm in specific areas like Dartmoor, Devon. The yellow warning cautions that there is a risk of flooding to homes and businesses, as well as dangerous conditions due to fast-flowing water.
Monday’s weather is expected to bring persistent rain, particularly in the latter part of the day and through the night, before gradually easing on Tuesday. Given the already saturated grounds from recent rainfall, some flooding and disruptions are probable.
Broader Weather Patterns
As January’s significant rainfall statistics are scheduled for release, meteorologists note that parts of the South West, Northern Ireland, and eastern Scotland have experienced nearly double the average monthly rainfall for January this year. This has raised concerns about ongoing flood risks, particularly groundwater flooding in the southern regions and river flooding in the Somerset Levels.
Looking ahead, a potential sudden stratospheric warming (SSW) event could occur in early February. This phenomenon may lead to significant shifts in weather patterns, including the possibility of a cold spell in the UK. SSW events have historically been linked to severe winter weather, such as the ‘Beast from the East’ in 2018.
Impact in Ireland
Across the Irish Sea, parts of Ireland have also been dealing with the aftermath of heavy rainfall. Clean-up operations are currently underway following flooding that has affected homes and roads, particularly in Co Wexford where a landslide has blocked access to Our Lady’s Island.
Background
This ongoing severe weather is part of a broader trend observed in the UK, where heavy rain and strong storms have become increasingly common in recent winters. The risk of flooding, particularly in vulnerable areas, is a growing concern as climate patterns continue to shift.
