UK and Switzerland Advance Trade Negotiations in London
The latest round of discussions aimed at enhancing the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) between the UK and Switzerland was held in London from 12 to 16 January 2026. This agreement is set to strengthen economic ties, benefiting British businesses and creating job opportunities.
Focus on Economic Growth
The new trade negotiations reflect the UK government’s intention to foster economic development by solidifying partnerships with its 10th largest trading partner, Switzerland. In the year ending September 2025, trade between the two nations was valued at £49 billion. The agreement is designed to provide certainty to UK service industries by securing market access, ensuring data flows freely, and finalising arrangements for business travel.
Supporting UK Jobs
The current trading relationship has been instrumental in supporting approximately 130,000 jobs in the UK, particularly within the legal, consultancy, and finance sectors. The enhanced FTA aims to replace the existing agreement, which primarily addresses goods and was established in 2019. The earlier framework was largely derived from a 1972 EU-Swiss arrangement, failing to account for services, investments, or digital data, despite services constituting over 60% of UK-Swiss trade.
Updated Commitments
In conjunction with the FTA negotiations, the UK and Switzerland have agreed to extend the Services Mobility Agreement for an additional four years, now valid until 2029. This extension signifies a commitment to improving collaboration in service sectors.
Sustainability and Labour Policies
A provisional agreement has also been reached in areas concerning environmental measures and labour policies, which will be consolidated into a new chapter titled ‘Trade and Sustainable Development’. This indicates both countries’ dedication to ensuring that trade agreements not only boost economic growth but also uphold social and environmental standards.
Next Steps in Trade Negotiations
The UK government remains focused on achieving tangible outcomes from the enhanced FTA negotiations that will stimulate economic growth. It has reaffirmed that any future trade agreements must reflect the nation’s interests, maintaining high standards across various sectors while ensuring protection for the National Health Service.
