Prime Minister Outlines Ukraine Support Ahead of G20 Summit
In advance of the G20 summit, the Prime Minister reiterated the UK’s commitment to supporting Ukraine in seeking a ceasefire and meaningful peace negotiations. Emphasising ongoing discussions among Ukraine’s allies, the Prime Minister highlighted the importance of strengthening current proposals for peace as the conflict persists.
Focus on Ceasefire and Peace Negotiations
During a briefing, the Prime Minister announced that Ukraine’s allies would convene on the sidelines of the summit to debate methods for attaining a complete ceasefire, aimed at facilitating serious peace talks. Central to these discussions will be a review of existing peace proposals, with support for President Trump’s efforts to enhance these negotiations.
Condemnation of Russia’s Actions
In a strong denunciation of Russia, the Prime Minister pointed out that only one nation involved in the G20 discussions is not advocating for a ceasefire while simultaneously launching attacks against Ukrainian civilians. This week alone has seen a significant escalation in hostilities, with reports of nearly 1,000 drones and 54 precision missiles targeting Ukraine, resulting in injuries, including among vulnerable populations.
Ukraine’s Call for Peace
The Prime Minister stated that the desire for peace is most ardently felt by the Ukrainian people. He noted that Ukraine has consistently urged an end to Russia’s invasion, calling for a halt to military aggression. He stressed that Ukraine has shown readiness to negotiate for many months, whereas Russian actions have largely contradicted its proclaimed intentions for peace.
Joint Efforts for Lasting Peace
A collaborative approach is essential, according to the Prime Minister, who emphasised the need for coordination with both the United States and Ukraine to achieve a fair and enduring peace. He insisted that waiting idly for peace is not an option; proactive measures must be taken.
Ending Dependence on Russian Energy
The Prime Minister highlighted the necessity of reducing the UK’s reliance on Russian gas as a crucial step towards limiting funding for the Russian government. While acknowledging the challenges this poses, he maintained that it is imperative to support Ukraine’s recovery, particularly in rebuilding its energy infrastructure that has been devastated by ongoing attacks.
Financial Support for Ukraine
Furthermore, the Prime Minister set forth a proposal for reparations loans backed by Russian sovereign assets to ensure Ukraine has the means to defend itself in the future. He concluded with a rallying call for all nations to unite in the pursuit of peace.
