Major General Matthew Jones Appointed as New Chief of Defence Intelligence
Major General Matthew Jones OBE has been appointed as the Chief of Defence Intelligence (CDI), following approval from His Majesty the King and Defence Secretary John Healey. He will assume his new role with the rank of Lieutenant General in the summer of 2026, succeeding Adrian Bird.
Restructuring of Military Intelligence Services
This appointment comes on the heels of significant reforms undertaken within the Ministry of Defence (MOD) aimed at streamlining the intelligence function. Last year, the MOD established the Military Intelligence Services (MIS), consolidating various intelligence units under a single umbrella for improved efficiency in gathering, analysing, and sharing critical information among the Armed Forces, government, and allies. This initiative aligns with the objectives outlined in the Strategic Defence Review.
Career Overview of Major General Jones
With a career spanning over three decades, Major General Jones has held diverse roles within regimental and intelligence capacities. His operational experience includes deployments in conflict zones such as Afghanistan, Iraq, and the broader Middle East. Currently, he serves as the Director of Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance, where he manages various aspects of intelligence collection and counter-intelligence.
Reactions from Defence Leadership
Defence Secretary John Healey expressed confidence in Jones’s abilities, stating: “He possesses the right skills and experience to lead our Military Intelligence Services as we prepare for rising threats.” Healey acknowledged the contributions of Adrian Bird, who led Defence Intelligence successfully and contributed to the UK’s security efforts.
Adrian Bird, the outgoing Chief of Defence Intelligence, praised Jones’s selection, emphasising his capability to continue the transformation of the intelligence enterprise initiated after the Strategic Defence Review.
Jones’s Vision for the Future
Upon his appointment, Major General Jones stated, “It is a huge privilege to lead Defence Intelligence. I am eager to build on the work of my predecessor and continue the transformation of our intelligence capabilities.” He underscored the importance of effective decision-making and collaboration with allies as critical components of his agenda in safeguarding national security.
The Importance of Military Intelligence Services
The newly structured Military Intelligence Services are designed to enhance the UK’s military intelligence efficacy, improving the nation’s capacity to anticipate and respond to emerging threats. This restructuring is particularly relevant as there has been over a 50% rise in hostile intelligence activities directed at the MOD in the past year, highlighting the urgency of these reforms.
Within the framework of MIS, various intelligence organisations and personnel from the Royal Navy, British Army, Royal Air Force, and civil service will work together. Their main responsibilities encompass intelligence collection, assessment, and counter-intelligence to ensure the UK maintains a strategic advantage during competitive and crisis situations.
