The Scottish government has reportedly expended upwards of £766,000 in taxpayers’ money in an ongoing legal dispute concerning the definition of a woman. The breakdown of costs as revealed by a Freedom of Information request indicates that £216,182.50 had been spent on the judicial review at the Court of Session in Edinburgh, which FWS won in February 2022. This expenditure included payments to cover both the Scottish government’s counsel and court fees, along with legal costs for the campaign group.
Subsequently, the Scottish government invested at least £550,316.30 in the judicial review at the UK Supreme Court, which included the substantial payment of £392,500 to FWS along with additional fees for its own legal counsel.
