Historic Auction of ‘Mouseman’ Tables Raises £78,000
A school at risk of closure has successfully auctioned two iconic 1930s dining tables, fetching a total of £78,000. Hosted by Hawley’s Auctioneers, the event marked a significant milestone in the history of Mouseman furniture, with one table believed to have set a world record price for the brand.
Record-Breaking Sales
The first table, a remarkable six-metre-long piece crafted in 1937, sold for £42,000, establishing a new high for Mouseman furniture at auction. This extraordinary piece, made from oak and adorned with the signature mouse carvings of renowned craftsman Robert “Mouseman” Thompson, was purchased by a bidder from Yorkshire.
The second table, which measures nearly five metres and dates back to 1935, was sold for £36,000 to a bidder located in Hawaii. Both items exceeded initial estimates, with the 1937 table originally valued between £8,000 and £12,000, and the 1935 piece estimated at £5,000 to £8,000.
Significance of the Auction
The auction took place at Beverley Racecourse and attracted several phone bidders. According to Caroline Hawley, the auctioneer, the bidding escalated notably, showcasing the high demand and appreciation for Mouseman craftsmanship.
Each table was sold with four matching benches, also designed by Thompson, which fetched between £3,000 and £5,000. Hawley expressed her excitement, confirming that the £42,000 price for the 1937 table is indeed the highest ever recorded for any piece of Mouseman furniture.
Context of the Sale
Moorlands School, an independent preparatory institution in Leeds, announced its closure set for 31 December after nearly 130 years of operation. In June, the school revealed its decision to sell the dining tables, which have been a staple in the school community for generations. These tables and benches, gifted by alumni, hold sentimental value and have been central to the school’s dining experience.
Headteacher Jacky Atkinson remarked on the significance of the tables, noting their integral role in the school’s history. The successful auction serves as both a poignant farewell to the school and a celebration of the craftsmanship of Robert “Mouseman” Thompson.
