Investigation Continues Following Deadly Synagogue Attack in Manchester
Authorities in Greater Manchester have been granted additional time to interrogate a 31-year-old man detained in connection with the recent assault on the Heaton Park synagogue, which resulted in two fatalities. The man was arrested on Thursday, and police have confirmed he may be held for up to a week for further questioning.

Last month, a tragic incident unfolded at the Heaton Park Hebrew Synagogue in Crumpsall, where seven arrests have been made in connection with the violence. The perpetrator, identified as Jihad al Shamie, was a Syrian-born UK citizen. Reports indicate that he deliberately drove his vehicle into congregants gathered to observe the Jewish holy day of Yom Kippur. Following the attack, al Shamie wielded a knife and attempted to breach the synagogue’s entrance.
Police Response
Armed officers fatally shot al Shamie after he advanced aggressively towards them with a knife, prompting fears that he was carrying an explosive device. This was later confirmed to be a false alarm. The incident led to the deaths of two individuals: Melvin Cravitz, aged 66, and Adrian Daulby, aged 53. Witnesses described Daulby as a “quiet hero,” as he attempted to block the doors during the assault. The coroner’s inquest revealed that he succumbed to injuries from a gunshot fired by police, while Cravitz died from multiple stab wounds inflicted by al Shamie.
Status of the Investigation
The inquests into the deaths of Daulby and Cravitz have been postponed until February next year. Meanwhile, three other victims sustained serious injuries in the attack, although two of them have since been discharged from medical care.
In the aftermath of the incident, the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) has confirmed that there was no misconduct in the police’s response. Assistant Chief Constable Rob Potts of Counter Terrorism Policing North West stated that the families of the victims and those injured have been kept informed of the ongoing investigation and urged anyone with information to come forward.
