£23 Million Grant Fuels Transport Links for Thamesmead and Beckton
Homes England has allocated a significant £23 million grant to Transport for London (TfL) aimed at revitalising two major brownfield areas—Thamesmead Waterfront and Beckton Riverside. This funding is part of ongoing efforts to support housing development and improve transport connections in the region.
Enhancing Transport Connectivity
The newly provided grant will facilitate the development of a bus link designed to integrate new housing estates with existing transport routes. This will enhance connectivity between Thamesmead and key rail links at Abbey Wood and Woolwich Elizabeth line stations.
Construction of this transport infrastructure is set to precede a broader extension of the Docklands Light Railway (DLR), following government backing highlighted in the autumn budget for 2025. The initiative enjoys the support of Homes England’s expertise and resources.
Government’s Commitment to Housing Development
Housing Secretary Steve Reed expressed that the DLR extension represents a crucial component of the government’s strategy to accelerate economic growth. He stated that improved public transport links would unlock land for thousands of new homes and generate employment opportunities, reaffirming the government’s commitment to not only build 1.5 million homes but also ensure regions like Thamesmead receive necessary investment.
Impact on New Communities
The Bus Transit project is considered vital for the DLR extension, which aims to create between 25,000 and 30,000 new homes across approximately 145 hectares of brownfield land shared between the London boroughs of Newham and Greenwich. This project is part of a wider collaborative effort involving TfL, the Greater London Authority (GLA), local councils, developers, landowners, and various government departments.
Forward-looking Initiatives
Amy Rees CB, Chief Executive of Homes England, noted that this collaboration exemplifies how local and national stakeholders are combining their resources to develop essential infrastructure and housing. She emphasised the agency’s pride in partnering with local leaders to ensure that citizens have access to safe, secure housing within sustainable communities.
According to Alex Williams, TfL’s Chief Customer and Strategy Officer, the funding signifies a crucial advancement in enhancing transport options for both Thamesmead and Beckton Riverside. He highlighted that improved bus services, coupled with the forthcoming DLR extension, will significantly contribute to the creation of sustainable communities equipped with essential transport infrastructure.
Background
This funding initiative forms part of a larger strategy to address housing shortages in London and promote urban regeneration, particularly in areas with previously underutilised land. The collaboration represents a key step toward ensuring that infrastructure development keeps pace with the growing demand for housing in the capital.
