PM Celebrates Small Businesses at Downing Street Christmas Showcase
The Prime Minister hosted a vibrant Christmas market event at Downing Street, highlighting the significance of small businesses and frontline workers as part of the annual festive lights switch-on. With consumer spending projected to rise by 19% this year, small firms across the UK stand to benefit significantly as the festive season approaches.
Supporting Small Businesses Ahead of the Festive Season
During the showcase, small businesses were hailed as the backbone of the UK’s economy, comprising the majority of jobs and serving local communities. According to data from Small Business Britain, this Christmas could yield an additional £5 billion for these firms, thanks to a 19% increase in spending compared to last year. The showcase took place in anticipation of Small Business Saturday, which encourages the nation to support the estimated 5.6 million small enterprises.
Recognition for Frontline Workers and Community Champions
In addition to acknowledging small businesses, the event also celebrated the contributions of NHS personnel, military members, firefighters, and police officers. Among those honoured was 14-year-old litter picker Samuel Salamone, who had the honour of switching on the lights, embodying the essence of community spirit promoted by the government’s Pride in Place initiative.
Prime Minister’s Message
Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated, “Small businesses are the beating heart of our economy and the backbone of our communities. This Christmas, we’re not just switching on the lights – we are shining a spotlight on the incredible entrepreneurs, traders and family firms that keep our high streets thriving.” He emphasized that government measures, including extended rates relief and funding for apprenticeships, reflect a commitment to supporting these vital enterprises.

Government Initiatives to Support Small Businesses
The ongoing efforts to support small businesses were also underscored by recent measures introduced in Budget 2025. Notable initiatives include:
- A £4.3 billion package aimed at alleviating business rates for the hardest-hit sectors.
- Continued Annual Investment Allowance of £1 million, along with a new 40% First Year Allowance for main rate assets.
