Transport for London Reveals Impact of 20mph Speed Limits on Road Safety
New research from Transport for London (TfL) indicates that implementing a 20mph speed limit on city roads significantly lowers the incidence of fatalities and serious injuries. In light of these findings, Caroline Russell, a member of the London Assembly representing the Green Party, has urged for the expansion of this speed limit across the capital.
Call to Action from London Assembly
Following the release of TfL’s research, Russell emphasised the importance of adopting these lower speed limits throughout London. She has called upon the Mayor and local boroughs to consider rolling out the 20mph measures more broadly and to assess the feasibility of additional speed reductions, particularly to 10mph in areas such as schools, hospitals, and shopping districts.
Voicing Concerns Over Road Safety
During her statement, Russell expressed optimism about the new evidence, stating, “We now have a tool at our disposal that clearly saves lives.” She insisted that every incident resulting in road deaths is preventable and stressed the need to prioritise the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, and those with mobility challenges over the convenience of motor vehicle users in London’s congested areas.
“It is unacceptable that the convenience of people using motor vehicles outweighs the safety of people walking, wheeling and cycling in our densely crowded city,” she added. Russell implored the Mayor and borough leaders to take this evidence seriously, pledging that delivering safer roads is a moral obligation to every bereaved family and those who have suffered serious injuries as a result of road traffic incidents.
Background
In recent years, concerns regarding road safety have escalated in London, with rising numbers of casualties prompting calls for more effective measures to protect vulnerable road users. Previous initiatives have included campaigns promoting lower speed limits, yet the impact of implementing a city-wide 20mph limit has been the subject of ongoing debate.
