South Korean Woman Sentenced for Blackmailing Football Star Son Heung-min
A woman from South Korea has been handed a four-year prison term for her role in blackmailing former Tottenham Hotspur striker Son Heung-min. The individual, referred to as Yang, was convicted of extorting approximately £152,000 from the athlete by falsely claiming that he was the father of her unborn child.
Details of the Case
Yang was charged after she allegedly sent Son an ultrasound image of a baby, asserting that he was the child’s father. Following this, she demanded a significant sum of money to keep her claims quiet. In a further twist, she collaborated with an accomplice, known as Yong, in an attempt to extract even more funds from the footballer.
The Seoul Central District Court revealed that Yang had deceived Son, although she did not confirm the identity of the child’s father. Despite the overwhelming evidence, Yang denied the allegations of both extortion and attempted extortion during her trial.
Yong, who admitted to his involvement in the plot, received a two-year sentencing as a result of his confession.
Context of the Incident
This incident comes at a time when Son, who has made a name for himself as one of Asia’s most celebrated footballers, is transitioning to new opportunities in his career. Earlier this year, it was reported that a woman in her 20s and a man in his 40s were arrested on suspicion of trying to blackmail Son while he was still playing for Tottenham Hotspur in June 2023. The case highlights ongoing challenges faced by public figures in terms of personal privacy and security.
Significance for the Football Community
Son, now aged 33, has not only captained the South Korean national team but has also enjoyed a decade-long career in the Premier League, recently making a switch to LAFC. His prominence in the sport makes him a target for unwanted attention, raising important questions about the responsibilities and protections afforded to athletes in high-pressure environments.
