UK Strengthens Defence Ties with Armenia and Azerbaijan
This week, Lord Coaker, the UK Defence Minister, embarked on a visit to Armenia and Azerbaijan, emphasising the UK’s commitment to enhancing regional security and stability. The visit aligns with the UK’s recent pledge to deepen strategic partnerships with both nations, highlighting defence cooperation as a key priority.
New Defence Initiatives in Armenia
During his trip, Lord Coaker inaugurated the UK’s first permanent Defence Section in Yerevan, signalling a long-term commitment to bolstering Armenia’s security and defence capabilities. In meetings with Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan and Defence Minister Suren Papikyan, discussions centred on advancing defence reforms and modernisation efforts.
Engagements in Azerbaijan
In Azerbaijan, the Defence Minister met with President Ilham Aliyev and other high-ranking officials, such as Colonel General Zakir Hasanov, the Minister of Defence, and Vugar Mustafayev, the Minister of Defence Industry. The discussions focused on expanding defence and security partnerships between the UK and Azerbaijan.

Strengthening ties with Armenia and Azerbaijan not only aims to foster peace and prosperity but also aligns with the UK’s broader foreign policy objectives in maintaining regional stability.
