St Mabyn Sewage Treatment Expansion Under Consultation
A public consultation has commenced as South West Water seeks approval to enhance sewage processing capabilities at its Wadebridge Road wastewater treatment facility in St Mabyn, Cornwall. The proposed upgrade aims to accommodate waste from the nearby Chapelfields housing development, which is currently transported by tankers to other treatment locations.
Permit Application Overview
South West Water has formally submitted an application for an environmental permit, which would enable an increase of 12 cubic metres per day—roughly equivalent to the capacity of a large van. This additional capacity is exclusively intended to process domestic sewage generated by the Chapelfields estate.
The Environment Agency has expressed a tentative inclination to approve this permit request, following an initial consultation held from 20 August to 17 September 2025. The current consultation, designed to gauge public interest, will extend until 11.59pm on 26 January 2026. During this period, comments can be submitted regarding both the draft permit and the agency’s preliminary decision document.
Capacity and Environmental Safeguards
This upgrade is specifically focused on managing domestic sewage and will not be equipped to handle surface water or storm overflow. Furthermore, it will not be capable of processing waste from any substantial future housing schemes. South West Water is tasked with guiding any forthcoming developers towards alternative sewage treatment solutions.
Treated effluent from the facility is set to be discharged into a tributary of the River Allen, adhering to strict limits to prevent pollution and protect local wildlife. The proposed operations aim to balance the needs of increased housing capacity with the imperative of environmental stewardship.
Regulatory Guidelines and Public Input
The Environment Agency is obliged to approve the permit unless significant technical issues arise. This aligns with the government’s regulatory framework, which aims to prevent unnecessary hindrance to economic growth.
Community members interested in voicing their opinions on the application can engage through the online consultation platform, via email, or by mail at the specified addresses. Assistance is also available for those requiring alternative formats for participation.
