NHS Faces Severe Flu Challenge This December
The NHS in England is bracing for what is described as a “worst-case scenario” this December due to a significant spike in flu cases, dubbed “super flu.” Recent data indicates that hospitalisations due to flu have surged by more than 55% in just one week, with an average of 2,660 patients in hospitals daily.
Surge in Hospital Admissions
This December is shaping up to be unprecedented, with health authorities noting that the current number of flu-related hospital admissions is the highest recorded at this time of year. Additionally, the situation appears to be worsening, as health service leaders predict no peak in sight.
The number of patients hospitalised with norovirus has also escalated, climbing by 35%. This dual surge is placing immense pressure on healthcare services.
A&E Demand Soars
The challenges are compounded by soaring demand in Accident and Emergency (A&E) departments. Monthly statistics reveal that there were a record 2.35 million A&E attendances in November—over 30,000 more than the same month last year. Ambulance incidents have also increased, with 48,814 more incidents reported this year compared to 2024.
Impending Strikes Heighten Concerns
The escalating demand for healthcare coincides with a planned strike by resident doctors from December 17 to 22, raising fears of potential disruptions just before the Christmas period. In light of this, health officials have advised patients to attend verified appointments unless notified otherwise.
Call for Vaccinations
In an effort to combat the influx of patients, the NHS is urging those eligible to receive their flu vaccinations. So far this season, over 17.4 million vaccinations have been administered, marking an increase of more than 381,000 compared to last year. Professor Meghana Pandit, NHS national medical director, has emphasised the urgent need for these vaccinations to help mitigate serious illness during this challenging time.
