Farmers Benefit from Countryside Stewardship Payments
The Rural Payments Agency (RPA) has announced that over 75% of eligible farmers have received their Countryside Stewardship and Environmental Stewardship payments, following the opening of the 2025 payment window on 1 December. As of 12 December, a total of more than 28,351 payments amounting to £435.6 million have been disbursed.
Ongoing Payment Process
The payment process will continue throughout December and into the coming months, supporting farmers as they seek to balance environmental responsibilities with sustainable food production. The Countryside Stewardship and Environmental Stewardship schemes aim to enhance the ecological integrity of farming practices, benefitting both nature and agricultural businesses.
Environmental Impact and Objectives
These schemes focus on various environmental initiatives, including:
- Restoring and protecting habitats and species
- Enhancing water quality
- Reducing risks of flooding
- Increasing carbon capture
- Conserving historical and archaeological landmarks
By promoting sustainable land management practices, the programmes aim to strengthen farm resilience and future-proof rural economies, aligning with government goals for nature recovery, increased carbon storage, and responsible food production.
Comments from the RPA Chief Executive
Neil Hornby, Chief Executive of the RPA, stated:
The agency has been diligent in ensuring that farmers receive their payments quickly. We are pleased to report a strong start to the 2025 payment window, with an uptick in the number of payments made in comparison to the previous year. I appreciate the hard work of our teams, who are dedicated to providing excellent service.
Government Support for Farmers
The UK government is committed to fostering a sustainable and profitable future for the agricultural sector. By introducing advanced technologies, simplifying regulations, and promoting nature-friendly farming schemes, authorities are assisting farmers in meeting the nation’s food needs. Currently, more than half of farmers are engaged in such schemes, which not only benefit the environment but also enhance their financial viability.
