UK Celebrates One Year Membership in CPTPP Amid Strengthening Ties with Japan
The United Kingdom is commemorating its first anniversary as a member of the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP), a trade pact expected to enhance economic relations and trade opportunities with Japan. During a planned visit to Japan from 14 to 17 December, Indo-Pacific Minister Seema Malhotra will reveal a new UK-Japan Economic Security Partnership aimed at fortifying supply chain resilience.
Strengthening Economic Cooperation
Minister Malhotra’s visit will spotlight the tangible benefits that have arisen from the UK’s involvement in CPTPP, aimed at improving trade for businesses and consumers. A key feature of her itinerary is a reception dedicated to the semiconductor industry, intended to link UK innovations with potential Japanese investors and buyers.
Additionally, the Minister will participate in a British Council event that engages Japanese alumni from UK universities, signalling the UK’s commitment to educational ties. She will also engage in discussions with key stakeholders, including government officials in Osaka and parliamentarians, focusing on the UK’s Indo-Pacific strategy, as well as meeting with trade and investment partners.
A Statement on Economic Partnership
Reflecting on the UK’s strengthened relations with Japan, Minister Malhotra stated that the two nations are fostering unprecedented connections within their economies and societies. She highlighted the dual benefits for consumers and businesses, including a broader selection of products and competitive pricing, while ensuring supply chain security against unforeseen disruptions.
Trade Growth and Investment Outlook
In the past year, the UK has already reaped rewards from its CPTPP membership, with increases in the availability and affordability of products, such as Japanese rice in the UK market. Small businesses like Nana Lily have also benefited from tariff-free exports, illustrating the partnership’s positive impact on local enterprises.
HMA Julia Longbottom emphasized the significance of the upcoming visit, noting the delivery of considerable advantages through reduced tariffs and greater access to markets. She reaffirmed the UK’s dedication to fostering long-term business relations with Japan and expressed appreciation for Japanese investments, which have remained a vital part of the UK economy.
Recent Milestones in UK-Japan Relations
This visit encapsulates a fruitful year for UK-Japan relations, marked by key milestones including an Economic 2+2 dialogue involving Foreign and Business Ministers from both countries, the UK pavilion at the Osaka Expo, and the notable visit from the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh. The historical partnership was further underscored by the recent visit of Keidanren, Japan’s business federation, which was the first in 14 years.
Currently, bilateral trade between the UK and Japan exceeds £33 billion, reflecting a 4% increase over the past year. There has also been a doubling of Japanese investment in the UK over the last decade, with nearly 1,000 companies contributing to around 200,000 jobs. In terms of exports, the UK saw a nearly 9% rise to £16 billion from Japan within the year.
