Retail Compliance Progress Report Highlights Improvements for Suppliers
As the year draws to a close, the Groceries Code Adjudicator (GCA) has reported significant advancements in supplier relations with major UK retailers. The latest survey reveals that for the first time, over 90% of suppliers felt that their respective retailers mostly or consistently adhered to the Groceries Code, marking a notable decline in reported compliance issues.
Reflecting on 2025’s Achievements
In the recent survey for 2025, suppliers noted improved perceptions regarding the compliance of 13 retailers with the Groceries Code. This milestone signals a positive step towards fostering a more equitable trading environment within the grocery sector. The GCA remains dedicated to ensuring that suppliers are treated lawfully and fairly, allowing for growth and innovation within their businesses.
Key issues, such as delayed payments, troublesome de-listings, and forecasting difficulties, have seen substantial reductions since the establishment of the GCA. This progress is vital for maintaining healthy supplier-retailer relationships.
Meetings with Retailers to Enhance Compliance
Recently, the GCA met with Compliance Officers (CCOs) from the 14 designated retailers to discuss proactive measures aimed at addressing supplier concerns highlighted in the 2025 survey. Continuous engagement with these officers assures that retailers are making strides toward enhancing their compliance levels.
Furthermore, plans are in place for upcoming meetings with the audit committee chairs from each retailer, scheduled for early next year, to deepen oversight on compliance efforts.
Encouraging Open Dialogue for Suppliers
The importance of confidentiality for suppliers was underscored during discussions with retailers. CCOs are independent and pledge to maintain confidentiality concerning any issues that suppliers might raise. All 14 retailers have committed to protecting suppliers from any negative repercussions for voicing concerns, thereby fostering a culture of transparency.
Suppliers are encouraged to either contact a CCO directly or reach out to the GCA for confidential support. The GCA ensures that no identifying information about suppliers will be disclosed to retailers.
Upcoming 2026 Survey
The GCA has announced that it will launch its 2026 annual survey on January 12, with participation open until February 22. This survey presents an essential platform for suppliers to confidentially share their experiences with retailers, which will inform the GCA’s ongoing priorities and interventions.
Participation in this survey is crucial as it helps gauge compliance and pinpoint areas requiring intervention. Suppliers are strongly encouraged to contribute to this effort.
