Five Arrested in Essex Over Charity Clothes Theft Scheme
Five individuals have been apprehended by Essex Police in connection with a plot to steal large quantities of clothing from charity collection banks. The stolen goods were reportedly intended for sale abroad to fund a variety of criminal undertakings.

The police conducted a series of coordinated raids across numerous locations in Basildon, Thurrock, and parts of London, targeting the suspects associated with an alleged Lithuanian organised crime group. Officers from the Proactive Money Laundering Team (PMLT) stated that the group was believed to be removing garments from collection containers, particularly in urban areas where large volumes can be accessed easily.
Arrests Made
Among those arrested are men aged between 30 and 46, hailing from different areas including Pitsea, South Ockendon, Dagenham, and Purfleet. They have been taken into custody on suspicion of theft.

During the operations on Tuesday, law enforcement officials seized multiple mobile phones along with significant amounts of cash, including £10,000 found in a vehicle and over £10,000 discovered in a property. Authorities believe this money is linked to unlawful activities.

Detective Sergeant Mike Monkton highlighted the extensive nature of the alleged thefts, stating, “The scale of these thefts is huge — criminals are taking tonnes of clothing from sites nationwide that were intended to help others or raise money for those in need.” He further emphasized that the operation was a major disruption to the criminal network, asserting that it would assist in reducing crime and convey serious repercussions for offenders in the area.
