Government Launches Supply Coordination Forum for Veterinary Medicines in Northern Ireland
The UK government has introduced a Supply Coordination Forum, spearheaded by the Veterinary Medicines Directorate, to address potential disruptions in the supply of veterinary medicines to Northern Ireland starting 1 January. The initiative aims to ensure that veterinarians and farmers can swiftly communicate and resolve any operational supply challenges.
Purpose of the Forum
This newly formed forum will convene regularly throughout the upcoming year, providing an essential platform for stakeholders, including farmers and vets, to present and discuss supply-related concerns. This proactive approach is intended to facilitate quick resolutions to any issues that may arise in the distribution of veterinary medicines.
Online Purchasing Remains Uninterrupted
Pet owners and veterinary professionals will continue to have access to veterinary medicines through online platforms. A list of certified online retailers will remain available to guide customers in making their purchases.
Government’s Call for Transparency from Pharmaceutical Companies
While the government confirms that most veterinary medicines will still be accessible in Northern Ireland, it encourages pharmaceutical companies to enhance their communication regarding supply intentions. Ahead of the 1 January deadline, firms are urged to inform the Veterinary Medicines Directorate of any decisions to withdraw products from the market.
Recent Measures to Strengthen Supply Resilience
This announcement forms part of the government’s broader strategy to bolster the resilience of veterinary medicine supplies. It follows previous initiatives revealed on 19 June, which included the Veterinary Medicines Health Situation Scheme and the Veterinary Medicines Internal Market Scheme.
Guidance and Resources for Stakeholders
The Veterinary Medicines Directorate has also made available guidance documents and webinars aimed at helping businesses and veterinary professionals prepare for the impending changes. Additionally, it provides a comprehensive list of online retailers authorised to sell these medicines, which must be obtained through qualified professionals.
Minister’s Remarks
Animal Welfare Minister Baroness Hayman stated:
The government is actively safeguarding the supply of veterinary medicines in Northern Ireland, with the majority set to continue being available. I urge pharmaceutical firms to communicate their supply strategies promptly to address any minor disruptions next year.
Future Changes in Supply Rules
From 1 January 2026, new regulations governing the provision of veterinary medications in Northern Ireland will be introduced. After extensive consultations with pharmaceutical representatives, the government continues to believe that most current veterinary products will remain available in the region, as outlined in the UK’s official communications.
