HMRC App Sees Surge in Engagement Among Users in 2025
The adoption of the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) app has witnessed remarkable growth, with over 4.2 million downloads projected for 2025 and a substantial increase in logins. The number of users logging into the app has surpassed 136 million, marking a 20% rise from the previous year, reflecting a growing trend towards digital management of tax affairs across the UK.
Shift Towards Digital Tax Management
As more individuals embrace the technology, the HMRC app has become a vital tool for managing personal tax responsibilities. The total number of users has grown to over 7.18 million, up from 5.09 million in 2024. This digital transformation indicates a significant shift in public sentiment towards self-service tax management and illustrates an increasing confidence in utilising online resources for these tasks.
Demographics of App Usage
The app’s popularity is particularly notable among older and retired users, who are driving much of the increase in engagement. A staggering 2.38 million individuals accessed their State Pension forecasts in 2025, a significant jump from 1.72 million the previous year. This interest reflects a growing awareness and need for transparency regarding retirement finances among older demographics.
Other areas of app usage also reported gains. Nearly 960,000 users engaged with the Child Benefit section of the app, up by 160,000. This includes an increase in parents extending Child Benefit for teenagers remaining in education, which rose from 109,000 to 159,000 in 2025. Additionally, users storing their National Insurance numbers within the app grew to 383,000, an increase of 70,000 compared to the previous year, indicating the app’s utility in everyday financial management.
Government Support and Future Goals
The escalation in app usage aligns with HMRC’s ongoing efforts, as outlined in their Transformation Roadmap, aimed at simplifying self-service options for users. Myrtle Lloyd, HMRC’s Chief Customer Officer, emphasised that the app has become an essential resource for individuals seeking to manage their tax affairs conveniently.
How to Access the App
HMRC encourages those who have not yet downloaded the app to do so through the App Store or Google Play. The app provides users with 24/7 access to vital tax-related information, and a nationwide advertising campaign titled ‘You’re On It’ continues to promote its user-friendly features.
The HMRC app offers a variety of functionalities, including:
- Access to tax codes, National Insurance numbers, and income histories
- Management of Child Benefit and State Pension forecasts
- Tools for estimating take-home pay and checking for contribution gaps
- Payment services for Self Assessment and Simple Assessment
- Support for updating personal information and tracking correspondence with HMRC
Background
This surge in app usage follows HMRC’s initiative towards digitalisation, aiming to streamline tax management processes for citizens. The public’s ability to easily access tax information represents a critical step in improving overall tax administration and fostering greater financial literacy among taxpayers.
