Interim Director Reflects on Progress Under Martyn’s Law
Since July, the Interim Executive Director of the Security Industry Authority (SIA) has been overseeing developments under Martyn’s Law. With a new director set to take over in January, the interim leader has shared insights into the regulatory advancements achieved over the past six months.
Mobilisation Phase of Martyn’s Law
Following the completion of foundational work on the regulatory framework, the SIA, in collaboration with the Home Office, has entered the mobilisation phase. This phase aims to enhance public safety through effective regulation inspired by Martyn’s Law.
Expert Team Collaboration
The interim director has led a seasoned team, consisting of professionals with regulatory experience and technical proficiency. This group has included experts on loan from well-respected UK regulatory agencies, contributing significantly to pilot initiatives in inspections and the development of a Risk Assessment Framework.
Engagement with Stakeholders
Key to the operation’s success is continuous engagement with the regulated community and other stakeholders. This collaborative approach has resulted in over 20 webinars reaching nearly 6,000 individuals in sectors such as retail, healthcare, and education. Furthermore, participation in key industry conferences has expanded reach, allowing for critical dialogue and outreach.
Future Directions
Looking ahead, the SIA plans to broaden its engagement with additional regulatory bodies and enforcement organisations, including local authorities and fire services. This expansion aims to foster collaboration while maintaining focus on specialised regulatory needs under Martyn’s Law. The aim is to improve public safety without introducing excessive regulations.
A Fond Farewell
As the interim director prepares to step down, there is a sense of pride in the commitment displayed by the team during this fast-paced period. The passion for enhancing public safety and combating terrorism has been a notable reflection of the significance of Martyn’s Law.
