Government Announces New Funding for Legal Support Services
The UK government has unveiled a substantial grant of nearly £20 million aimed at enhancing access to legal support for individuals grappling with issues related to debt, employment, housing, and family matters. The funding will be available for three years, commencing in October 2024.
Supporting Vulnerable Individuals
This initiative is designed to assist those at risk of facing significant life challenges, such as eviction or bankruptcy. By providing early access to legal advice, the programme aims to mitigate the financial and emotional distress these situations can cause, enabling individuals to seek assistance before facing potentially prohibitive court costs.
The Access to Justice Foundation will oversee the distribution and management of the grant, inviting various organisations within the advisory sector to apply. These entities play a key role in helping to secure justice for everyone, particularly the most vulnerable members of society.
Government’s Plan for Change
Deputy Prime Minister David Lammy highlighted the importance of this funding in ensuring that individuals facing difficult circumstances receive the necessary support. He emphasised that the funds will make vital legal information and assistance more accessible, thus contributing to a more sustainable legal support framework as part of the broader government’s Plan for Change.
Additionally, Lammy announced the six-month extension of two existing grant programmes—the Improving Outcomes Through Legal Support Grant and the Online Support and Advice Grant—prolonging essential support services until September 2026.
Long-term Legal Support Strategy
The government is also collaborating with various sector partners to implement a comprehensive long-term strategy aimed at improving the legal support system. This initiative seeks to enhance the system’s efficiency and sustainability, thus ensuring ongoing access to essential legal services for those in need.
Background
Access to legal support has emerged as a critical issue in the UK, especially for low-income individuals who may struggle to afford legal representation. The new funding marks a significant step in addressing these disparities and championing justice for all.
