Ukrainian military officials reported on Thursday that they successfully struck the Novoshakhtinsk oil refinery in the Rostov region of Russia using Storm Shadow missiles supplied by the UK. The UK granted Ukraine the authorization to employ Storm Shadow missiles on Russian soil last year. The missiles were first used operationally in November of the same year, marking a strategic escalation in Ukraine’s ability to impact Russian supply lines directly.

In addition to the refinery attack, Ukrainian drone strikes targeted oil product tanks at Russia’s Temryuk port located in the Krasnodar region, and hit a gas processing plant in Orenburg—approximately 1,400 km from the Ukrainian border. This plant is the largest of its kind in Russia. Reports indicate that the drone strikes led to at least two oil tanks catching fire, which spread flames over an area of about 2,000 square metres.
