Murder Investigation Underway After Death of Appleby Magna Man

Police have initiated a murder investigation following the death of a 66-year-old man, David Darke, who succumbed to injuries sustained during an altercation outside a village pub. Darke passed away in hospital six days after being punched near the Crown Inn in Appleby Magna, located in North West Leicestershire.

Emergency services were dispatched to the Crown Inn at approximately 9:45 PM on December 21, where they found Darke injured outside the establishment. He had suffered a serious head injury as a result of a punch and was subsequently taken to a hospital for treatment. Unfortunately, he died on Saturday, prompting police to escalate their inquiry.

Suspect Arrested

Leicestershire Police confirmed that a 36-year-old man, who was initially taken into custody on suspicion of grievous bodily harm, has since been rearrested on suspicion of murder. Detective Inspector Kevin Hames from the East Midlands Special Operation Murder Investigation Team commented on the case. He stated, “The initial investigation allowed us to identify several witnesses and obtain CCTV footage from the area. These inquiries will persist, and the suspect will be interviewed again by our detectives.” He also empathised with Mr Darke’s family, indicating that specialist officers are providing support during this difficult time.
