Deep-Sea Search for Missing MH370 Resumes After a Decade
The long-awaited search for the missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 has officially resumed, over ten years after the aircraft disappeared with 239 individuals onboard. The ongoing operation is spearheaded by the American marine robotics firm, Ocean Infinity, and aims to uncover the jet’s final resting place in the southern Indian Ocean.
Details of the Operation
The Boeing 777 was last detected on radar shortly after its departure from Kuala Lumpur en route to Beijing on March 8, 2014. Satellite analysis suggested that the plane diverted from its intended trajectory, ultimately heading south into a remote area of the Indian Ocean, where officials believe it ultimately crashed.
Following a multinational search led by Australia, which failed to locate the aircraft, some debris was identified along the East African coastline and Indian Ocean islands. In a recent statement, Malaysia’s transport ministry announced that Ocean Infinity would initiate a 55-day search beginning at the close of December.
Preparation and Logistics
As part of the new endeavour, the search vessel, Armada 86 05, has reached a specified search zone equipped with two autonomous underwater vehicles. Preparations for the search were conducted at Fremantle Port in Western Australia; however, the exact location of the search area remains undisclosed.
Financial Arrangements
The Malaysian government has agreed to a “no-find, no-fee” contract with Ocean Infinity, ensuring that the company will only receive a payment of $70 million (£53 million) if the wreckage is located. The firm had previously undertaken a private search in 2018 that yielded no results.

Oliver Plunkett, CEO of Ocean Infinity, has mentioned that the firm has collaborated with various experts to narrow down the search to the most likely crash site. Earlier this year, Ocean Infinity recommenced seabed search operations in a new area spanning 5,800 square miles in the southern Indian Ocean, though these efforts were temporarily halted in April due to adverse weather conditions.
The company has confirmed the resumption of the search but has refrained from providing further details, citing the sensitive nature of the operation.
