US President Donald Trump has issued a threat of intervention in Iran amidst ongoing protests fueled by rising living costs. This statement has elicited warnings from Iranian officials, suggesting that US involvement could further destabilise the region.

In a recent post on his social media platform, Truth Social, Trump remarked, “If Iran shoots and violently kills peaceful protesters, which is their custom, the United States of America will come to their rescue.” He assured that the US is “locked and loaded and ready to go.” His comments come after reports indicate at least seven individuals have lost their lives amid violent unrest across Iran, including the capital city, Tehran. These protests have been ignited, in part, by the significant devaluation of Iran’s rial currency.

In reaction to Trump’s declaration, Ali Larijani, the Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, cautioned on X (formerly Twitter) that US interference could lead to regional destabilisation and threaten American interests. He urged American citizens to recognise that Trump’s actions initiated this tension and emphasised the potential risk to US military personnel.

The protests in Iran have now entered their sixth day, marking the most significant demonstrations since the events of 2022, when the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini while in police custody spurred nationwide outrage.
