Arrest Made in Merseyside Waste Dumping Investigation
Authorities in Merseyside have arrested an individual and confiscated a heavy goods vehicle amid an investigation into suspected illegal waste dumping. This operation was launched following serious allegations regarding waste disposal practices in Liverpool.
Collaboration for Environmental Protection
On 2 February, the Environment Agency teamed up with the Joint Unit for Waste Crime (JUWC) and Merseyside Police to conduct an operation targeting an alleged illegal waste site. Jennifer Brittlebank, Area Environment Manager for the Environment Agency, expressed the urgency of the situation.
We’ve taken immediate action following suspected illegal waste activity in Liverpool. We share the public’s disgust with illegal dumping and the significant harm it causes to the environment and communities.
Brittlebank emphasised that waste crime is a serious concern, stating that it would not be tolerated. The agency is committed to working closely with its partners to address these issues effectively.
Joint Efforts Against Waste Crime
Phil Davies, who manages the JUWC, commented on the significance of the recent arrest. He highlighted the coordinated impact of collaborative law enforcement in combating waste crime.
This arrest is another fantastic example of the combined and co-ordinated law enforcement capabilities being used in the fight against waste crime. We continue to work hard to protect communities and the environment.
Davies urged the public to report any incidents or information related to waste crime, reinforcing the collective community responsibility in addressing this issue.
Support from Local Authorities
Merseyside Police Neighbourhood Inspector Michelle Ingram expressed satisfaction with the arrest and reiterated the police’s commitment to supporting the Environment Agency and local authorities in their fight against waste crime.
It is pleasing to see this investigation progress with an arrest. Merseyside Police will continue to support our Environment Agency and local authority partners to tackle the harm caused by waste crime.
Strengthening Waste Crime Units
The JUWC, which is hosted by the Environment Agency, comprises 12 partner agencies. It has led or participated in numerous multi-agency operations, resulting in substantial arrests. Recently, the unit expanded, enhancing its resources and capabilities to counter serious and organised waste crime.
With experienced enforcement and investigation officers, including former police officers, the JUWC is equipped with essential skills and knowledge to tackle waste criminality effectively.
Community Involvement is Vital
The ongoing investigation continues, and authorities encourage anyone with relevant information to report it to the Environment Agency at 0800 80 70 60 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously at 0800 555 111. Community vigilance is crucial in preventing illegal waste activities.
