Son of Detained Couple Calls Government Response “Criminal”
The son of a British couple detained in Iran has fiercely criticized the UK government for its inaction as he presented a petition with over 70,000 signatures to Downing Street. Lindsay and Craig Foreman, who were arrested on 3 January 2025 during a motorbike trip, are facing espionage charges they vehemently deny.

At a rally in London marking one year since the couple’s arrest, Joe Bennett expressed his frustration with the government’s “passive” approach. While he acknowledged the Foreign Office’s communication with their family, he demanded more decisive action from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.
“There seems to be this philosophy of letting the judicial process unfold, which feels like a farce,” Bennett stated. He highlighted that both parents are being accused of spying for the UK, with no public defense from the British government or any response from Iranian officials.
Conditions of Detention
During his speech, Bennett painted a harrowing picture of the conditions his parents are enduring. He claimed that his mother is currently malnourished and living in appalling conditions, lacking adequate bedding and facing vermin in her cell. “It’s been a crazy year, but the traumatic experience has taken a toll on us all,” he said, urging the public to rally around the cause for their release.

Also present at the rally was Richard Ratcliffe, whose wife Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe was held in Iran for over five years. Ratcliffe recalled the prolonged struggle for her release and emphasized the need for persistent advocacy for individuals trapped in similar situations. He remarked, “It’s important we keep the focus on those who are still detained and the hope that one day, their circumstances will change.”
Government’s Position
A spokesperson from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCDO) stated, “We are deeply troubled by the allegations faced by Craig and Lindsay Foreman. We continue to engage with the Iranian authorities regarding their case.” The spokesperson added that the FCDO remains in close contact with the Foreman family and is providing them with consular support.
